...Ranville Cemetery alone contains 2,235 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 97 of them unidentified. There are also 330 German graves and a few burials of other nationalities.

Just 10 minutes after landing at 00:26hrs June 6th 1944, and just 90 minutes after taking off from RAF Tarrant Rushton in England, Major Howard sent the code words Ham and Jam, indicating that both bridges had been captured. Forty-five years later the Mayor of Ranville unveiled a plaque to commemorate the capture of the Orne River bridge, now named "Horsa Bridge".
