My father was a Sword Beach Veteran

My father, Dennis Dayman, was a Sword Beach Veteran of the 2nd Battalion K.S.L.I. 3rd British Infantry Div. and landed at Lion Sur Mer on 7th June. He went on through France, Belgium, Holland & Germany and ended up in Hamburg when the war ended. He was one of those soldiers who liberated Belsen camp. Later he also went to Cyprus and Palestine.

On 5th June 2014 he was awarded his Legion d’Honneur in Caen. He went back to Normandy many times for the D-day celebrations and his last visit was in June 2016. He sadly died in the following July, just 6 weeks later.

My late father landed on Sword Queen Red on D-Day

My late father Michael landed on Sword Queen Red on D-Day with the 3rd Division. He moved on to Caen and up to Belgium And into Holland. He returned to Cork, Ireland in 1947 and worked here for the rest of his life. I went back to Normandy with him in 1982 and it was a very emotional trip for him, particularly in the town of Hermanville where there is a small cemetery.

He had not originally wanted to go back to Normandy and I did push a little I must say. He never spoke much about his army life as it was not popular to do so here in Ireland at that time. He was a lovely man; gentle in his ways and a great father to us. He was one of 3 brothers who served: one in Irish Guards and another in Royal Tank Regiment in Korea. May they rest in heavenly peace.
